Gender reveal ideas: 28 ways to share the news
Here are 28 gender reveal ideas, from classic cake and balloon reveals to low-key ones for two people and options for family who live far away, plus games, themes and the safety rules worth following. Most cost little and need nothing more than a sealed envelope from your provider’s office.
Before you plan: who knows the answer?
Ask whoever reads the result to write it on a card and seal it in an envelope, then give the envelope to the friend, baker or party store making the reveal. Many people learn the baby’s sex at the mid-pregnancy anatomy ultrasound, usually done between 18 and 22 weeks (source). Cell-free DNA blood screening can be done as early as 10 weeks; it is mainly a screening for chromosome conditions, and some reports include the sex (source). Ask your provider what your results will show.
Classic gender reveal ideas
- Cut the cake. The baker fills the center with pink or blue frosting or candy. You only need to give them the sealed envelope.
- Filled cupcakes or donuts. Same idea in single servings, so every guest gets a bite of the answer at once.
- Balloon box. A large gift box with colored balloons that float up when you open the lid. Fill them with helium and keep them tied down afterward.
- Handheld confetti cannon. Twist-to-pop tubes filled with colored paper confetti. Choose paper or biodegradable confetti, and point them away from faces.
- PiƱata. Guests take turns until it breaks open with colored candy or confetti inside.
- Pop the big balloon. One giant black balloon filled with colored confetti, popped with a pin on the count of three.
- Silly string or bubbles in team colors. Hand out cans or bottles for everyone after the reveal so the whole party joins in.
Low-key ideas for small groups
- Scratch-off cards. Each guest scratches a card at the same moment. Good for small groups and for mailing to family.
- A jigsaw puzzle. Order a custom puzzle with the answer printed on it, and let guests piece it together.
- Wrapped baby shoes. Wrap a pair of small shoes or a tiny outfit in the right color and open it on camera.
- The older sibling’s shirt. A big brother or big sister wears a “little brother” or “little sister” shirt and walks into the room.
- The family dog or cat. A bandana or collar tag in the right color. Have treats ready so the pet cooperates.
- Dinner out. Give the restaurant the envelope and ask for a dessert or a drink in the right color.
- A letter from a grandparent. Ask the person who holds the envelope to write a short letter that ends with the answer, and read it aloud.
- A photo booth sign. Hide the answer behind a flap on a sign and lift it for the first photo.
Outdoor gender reveal party ideas
- Splatter painting. Fill water balloons with washable paint and throw them at a big canvas; the color shows on the first hit. Keep the canvas as nursery art.
- Water balloon toss. Most balloons are filled with clear water; the last few hold the colored water.
- Glow sticks after dark. Hand out wrapped glow sticks and crack them together at dusk. No flames or sparks needed.
- A lawn sign. Rent or print a yard sign and unveil it with the neighbors watching.
- A sports reveal. A soccer ball, baseball or golf ball that bursts with colored chalk or confetti when kicked or hit. Use it on a lawn, away from anything that can burn.
Ideas for family who live far away
- Video call reveal. Schedule a call and have someone off camera hold the envelope so everyone hears it together.
- Mailed scratch-offs. Post a scratch-off card to each family and open them live on the call.
- A shared countdown. Send guests a link to a short video that ends with the answer, and press play at the same time.
Games and activities for the party
- Team boy or team girl voting. Guests vote as they arrive and drop the card in a jar; open it after the reveal.
- Old wives’ tales. Read the tales aloud and tally what they predict before the reveal.
- Gender reveal bingo. Hand out cards with baby words; the host calls them out while people eat.
- Baby predictions. Guests guess the birth date, weight and a name.
- A themed menu. Blue and pink drinks or snacks for each team, plus a neutral option for the host’s table.

Theme ideas
A theme gives the invitations, cake and team colors something to hang on. Popular pairings:
- Bows or bowties
- Little man or little miss
- Touchdowns or tutus
- Boots or bows
- Bee: what will it bee?
- Rattles or pearls
Blue and pink aren’t required. Green and yellow, sage and peach, or navy and gold all work if you’d rather skip them.
Keep it safe
Skip anything that burns or explodes: smoke bombs, fireworks, flares, sparklers and homemade explosives. In September 2020 a smoke-generating device set off at a gender reveal photo shoot in Yucaipa, California, started the El Dorado Fire. It burned more than 22,000 acres and killed firefighter Charles Morton, and the couple was later charged with involuntary manslaughter (source).
- Check local fire restrictions before any outdoor reveal, even one without flames.
- Don’t release balloons outdoors. They come back down as litter that animals can swallow.
- Keep colored powder and chalk away from heat and flames, and don’t throw it at faces.
- Use paper confetti outdoors and pick it up afterward.
Questions
When should you have a gender reveal party?
After you have the result, which for most people is after the anatomy ultrasound at around 18 to 22 weeks. Some families hold it soon after early blood screening instead.
Who hosts a gender reveal party?
Often the parents-to-be host it themselves, or a close friend or relative does. Unlike a baby shower, guests usually don’t bring gifts.
How long does a gender reveal party last?
Usually two to three hours: food and games first, the reveal near the end, then cake.
What if we want to keep it private?
Do the reveal for just the two of you, record it, and share the video. A scratch-off card or a dinner dessert works well for this.
